CARMEN - Georges Bizet

Carmen is an opera in 4 acts by French composer Georges Bizet. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy, based on a novella of the same title by Prosper Merimée. For the first time it was performed in Paris at the Opera-Comique on 3 March 1875 and was not well recived from the publicum, largely due to its breaking of convention and controversial main charachters, which shocked and scandalized its first audiences. Bizet died suddenly after the 33rd performance, and therefore unaware of its outstanding success in Vienna later that year. This Opera won the public and an international aclaim afterwards and nowadays is one of the most popular and frequently performed operas worldwide.

The main figure Carmen, is the archetypal woman who never allows anyone to rob her of her freedom, to others again an insatiable Jezebel ultimately incapable of relationships and love. The stirring and emotionally charged melodies of this opera still enchant legions of listeners to this day.
